National Home Security Month Week 1

Now in it’s sixth year, Week 1 of National Home Security Month (NHSM18) concentrates on the effectiveness of home alarm installations, and how having an alarm system can help to protect your home and possessions from burglars.

Surveys have revealed that a whopping 25% of homeowners in the UK admit to having no security measures in place! This is quite shocking, as it leaves your home and possessions almost completely vulnerable to burglary, and also has negative implications when considering your home insurance policies.

While we’re talking statistics, did you know that over 81% of burglars admit to being put-off by the presence of an alarm system, instead choosing to move on and select a different property to target? Further, over 60% of burglaries attempted on homes with an alarm actually fail.

Some reasons given for not having an intruder alarm installed in a property include concerns that pets living in the home may unintentionally set off the alarm once set. One solution to this problem would be to invest in an alarm system with “pet friendly” PIR camera sensors. Another option would be to have door & window contacts installed, these would only trigger the alarm if the door or window had been breached allowing your pets to roam freely around your home. There is always a solution to every requirement.

Other reasons given are centred around the cost implications of having an alarm installed. We would counter that argument by asserting that there are many cost-effective alarm systems available on the market, and they can be installed relatively cheaply, by a knowledgeable and experienced engineer – giving you and your family that extra peace of mind. The cost of installation really does compare favourably when you consider the value of your family’s safety, and the potential value of any possessions that might be lost in a burglary.

Even the presence of an alarm box on the outside of your home can often be enough of a visual deterrent!
