On household wooden doors the most common locks usually are:
These locks are very common on wooden doors. Key operated round cylinder on outside, square latch on inside, usually operated by small lever handle or round/oval thumb turn to open. Fitted slightly higher on door, around chest height. This is the type of lock generally can be pulled behind you on leaving the property and will automatically lock. When people lock themselves out accidentally, this lock is usually the culprit! If this is the only lock on your external door make sure it has the British Standard kite mark, otherwise you may not be covered by your insurance policy. Also you can change the cylinder and night latch independently of one another if it fails or you lose keys etc, this can keep the cost down as full lock change isn’t always needed. This type of lock is very common, easy to use and relatively inexpensive.
These locks are also very common on wooden doors. Nearly always fitted lower than night latches just lower than half way point of door, roughly hip height. These lock are considered much more secure than night latches and can be fitted to much heavier duty applications, very good option for home security. As the name suggests they are morticed into the frame not surfaced mounted which provides incredible strength. The lock is completely key operated so no danger of locking yourself out by mistake. When locked the key throws across a thick metal bolt which locks the door solidly to the frame.
As always make sure your lock meets British Standard requirements, this is usually what your insurance policy will insist on regarding home security. To check, simply unlock door and look at the faceplate of lock, you will hopefully see the BS kite mark. If you don’t it maybe time to upgrade. This type of lock, incredibly strong and robust, very popular with insurance companies and those who are very security conscious.

On household UPVC & Composite Doors the most common locks are:
These are usually the only type of cylinder you will find on a UPVC and Composite door. These cylinders can be key operated from both sides or you can have a thumb turn on the inside for ease of use or to meet with fire safety precautions. You can choose from multiple levels of security from economy through to high security 3* BS rated with restricted keys. The minimum requirement we advise is anti-snap. They are supplied in a variety of finishes to match any door. We also supply the handles which can make any tired door look great with minimal expense. UPVC and Composite doors are renowned for having a full length multiple locking point strip, which runs down the edge of the door.
We can order replacements for failed units or even if you just want a more secure upgrade, no need to replace the door!
Although euro cylinders are without question the most common cylinder on UPVC and Composite doors, you can get exceptions to the rule. The first that springs to mind is the ERA Vetis, instead of operating with a euro cylinder and standard rim cylinder (“Yale type”) key, it uses a mortice key which makes it very easy to identify.
