The very minimum requirement we advise is anti-snap, this is due to the surge in “break-in’s” that have broken in through snapping the cylinder out of the door using very basic, easy to get hold of, tools. This method has been highly publicised by various news channels.
Anti-snap cylinders are manufactured with a sacrificial segment on the end of the cylinder, so when forced to snapping point the sacrificial end breaks off leaving the main body of the cylinder inside the lockcase and door, which is still in the locked position. The remaining part of the cylinder cannot be accessed because it’s now too far inside the door to grasp.

You also have the options to key alike cylinders, this means you can have one key that fits all locks. Great option if you have multiple doors.
We also provide high security restricted key cylinders. This means the key is protected by a patent and cannot be cut by just any high street shop. It can only be cut by ProSecure Locksmiths. This is a great option for secure work premises that use master key systems. The system cannot be compromised by just any staff member cutting additional keys, we would require a list of signatories and these are the only people that could request duplicates, keeping strict control over said system.
The mechanism is the strip that run down the full length of the door with multiple locking points. There are various different types; roller cam, dead bolts, hooks etc.
Most are operated by lifting the handle to engage the locking points then turning key to lock into position.
Very often we attended jobs where the customer has complained that they cannot lock the door, this can either be a routine adjustment or a lock failure. Failure being the worst case scenario of the two and usually more expensive to fix due to cost of replacement parts. You don’t always have to replace the full length mech, if available to can just replace the gear box, this is the centre case that drives the locking points. These are usually cheaper than a full mechanism.
However an adjustment can be fairly quick and inexpensive to rectify. We at ProSecure Locksmiths have some handy tips to diagnose and isolate the fault. Although you may not be able to fix the door yourself, the information you give to the locksmith will be much more accurate, hopefully maker the job quicker and in turn cheaper.
If the door has not failed in the locked position. (If it has, this would most likely be a mechanical failure anyway).
Open door and try to lift the handle and lock, if it locks perfectly this will usually indicate the door may only need adjusting. Should be a reasonably quick job with minimal amount of parts, if any.
With the door open and you still cannot lock the door. This would indicate a mechanical fault. You may have a problem with the gearbox or the euro cylinder. Both parts are easily replaceable.
Although most modern upvc and composite doors have accessible adjustment points be very wary! You can make problems much worse if you don’t understand how they operate. If it takes the locksmith more time on site to correct your errors it could possibly end up costing you more, some things are best left to the experts…
