Week 2 – Knock Knock, Who’s There?
In this weeks blog we will be focusing on door security as 5% of all break-ins are due to doors being left unlocked!
The are various lock options available that will eradicate the issue of doors being left unlocked.
If you have a wooden front door you could opt for a British Standard night latch. This will automatically lock behind you as you pull the door closed, no need to physically turn a key.

The British Standard versions are quipped with some great security features which include….
- Automatic deadlocking facility and anti-slip features
- Anti-pick measures in place
- Anti-drill qualities
- Anti-bump (type of lock manipulation)
- Minimum of 6 pin or equivalent
- Larger reinforced latch/bolt
- Armoured cylinder shroud (brand/model specific)
- Key lockable from inside
Don’t fret If you have a uPVC door, there are options available for you too.
You can change the existing mechanism from single spindle to either “twin” or “split spindle”. This would now create a situation where you would still need a key to retract the latch from outside for entry even if the door hadn’t been fully locked.
Although this is a great fix to stop an opportunistic burglar quietly creeping in and snatching car keys or a hand bag, please bear in mind that for full security you must lift the handle to engage all locking points before locking.
If you have a modern home or a new build with uPVC or composite doors, you could already have this option but it’s currently not being utilised. You can easily remove the handles and check.
If it looks like the photo below, it’s a twin spindle and you can simply replace the existing handles.

Smart Options
If you would like something more high tech there are various SMART options available.
Smart CCTV can keep a watchful eye over your home and notify you of any unwanted visitors with alert notifications when an incident has been detected. You can check in any time, anywhere, with the remote viewing option via your smartphone.
SMART alarms are another great option. You will receive alerts if the alarm has been triggered. You can view the inside of your property via a PIR image camera while using your smartphone. You can also arm and disarm the alarm remotely using your smartphone and the designated app.
