Welcome to our second instalment of the National Home Security Month 2022 – #NHSM22
With the huge rise in demand for uPVC and Composite doors, this week we will be focusing on issues surrounding these particular types of door.
Now most uPVC and Composite doors are operated by a euro cylinder and some type of full length multi locking point mechanism.
The full length mechanisms can use various locking methods to secure the door to the frame from multiple roller cams and mushrooms through to hooks and deadbolts.
In our opinion we would say hook-style locking points tend to be more secure and more difficult to break into.
If you are unsure what type of locking points you currently have, it’s very easy to check. Open the door and move the handle up and down and you will notice the locking points moving on the edge of the door.
The most common types of locking points seem to be roller cams, hooks, dead bolts, mushroom head.
Multi Point Locking Mechanisms
Most multi point locking mechanisms would normally be paired with a euro cylinder. This is what locks the mechanism into position so the handle cannot be pulled down to unlock the door, so it makes sense to own or upgrade to a more secure version.
Unfortunately a very well known method of forced entry is cylinder snapping. This can usually only be done on ill-fitting, poor quality cylinder and handles. However, there are security measures you can take.
Door Security and Protection
The easiest way to protect your door is to upgrade your euro cylinder to a 3 star classification or equivalent standard. These cylinders have integrated anti-snap measures in place, including sacrificial ends and centre cam lock down if snapping is attempted. The downside is that these cylinders can be fairly expensive.
Another option is to combine a 1 star rated euro cylinder with a 2 star – Pas 24 certified security handle set, when combined they create a 3 star status.
If you already have a 1 star cylinder it would be cheaper to just buy a set of Pas 24 security handles. If your existing cylinder and handles are low quality/security, it would then be more cost effective to just buy a 3 star cylinder as it meets the security requirements on its own.
